Video Chat Not Working? 8 Quick Fixes for Camera, Mic and Lag
Black screen, no sound, constant lag? Eight checks that fix most browser video chat problems.

You tap Start, the preview stays black, and the other person is nowhere to be seen. Or the picture is there but the sound is not. Or the whole thing stutters like a bad film reel.
When video chat is not working, it is almost always one of eight things, and most take under a minute to check. Work through them in order.
1. Check camera and microphone permission
This is the cause more often than anything else. Look for the lock or camera icon next to the web address, tap it and set Camera and Microphone to Allow. On iPhone also check Settings > Safari > Camera and Microphone. On Android check Chrome site settings. Then reload the page.
2. Close anything else that uses the camera
Only one app can use the camera at a time. Close other video apps, meeting tools and browser tabs that may have grabbed it, then try again. If you are on a computer, quit the other program fully rather than just minimising it.
3. Reload, then restart the browser
It is dull advice but it works. Reload the page first. If the camera is still stuck, close the browser completely and reopen it.
4. Use a current browser
Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android give the best results. On a computer, use a current version of Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox. If one browser misbehaves, try another. Browsers differ a little by device, which matters when you use Vidizzy as a video chat app on iPhone, Android or desktop.
5. Fix lag by improving your connection
- Switch from mobile data to Wi-Fi, or move closer to the router.
- Pause big downloads and streaming on the same network.
- On a laptop, plug in, since battery saver modes can throttle video.
6. Sort out no sound or echo
Check the media volume and that you are not muted. If the other person hears an echo, use headphones; speakers feed their own voice back into your microphone. If they cannot hear you, check which microphone your browser is using in its site settings.
7. Improve a dark or grainy picture
Face a window or put a lamp in front of you rather than behind. Wipe the camera lens, which gets smudged more than you would think. A steady surface also helps the picture stay sharp.
8. Tap Next if one match will not connect
Sometimes the problem is on the other person's side. If a match will not load or freezes, tap Next and try again. If nothing connects at all, the steps above are the place to look.
The order that saves the most time
If you only have a minute, do these three first: allow the camera in site settings, close every other app that could be using it, and reload the page. Those three solve the large majority of black screens. If the picture works but the sound does not, jump straight to the microphone check. If everything works but looks choppy, skip to the connection steps.
It also helps to change only one thing at a time. If you switch browser, move rooms and restart the router all at once, you will never know which one fixed it, and you will be back to square one next time it breaks.
When the problem is not on your side
Occasionally a chat will not load because of the other person: their connection dropped, their camera stuck, or they closed the tab. That is not your device misbehaving. A frozen frame that never recovers, or a call that ends after a second, usually means the match was bad rather than your setup. Tap Next and try again before you start changing settings.
